From Dreams to Destinations: Experiencing Paris and Amsterdam with My Family

After decades of helping others plan their dream vacations, I finally embarked on one of my own—a long-awaited family trip to Paris and Amsterdam. What began as a journey through two of Europe’s most beautiful cities became something much deeper: a reflection on faith, family, and the gift of time.

There Is a Time for Everything: My First Journey to Paris and Amsterdam

“There is a season for everything and a time for every delight, event, and purpose under heaven.” – Ecclesiastes 3:1 (AMP)

This week marks the seventh day of our family trip—four nights in Paris and four days in Amsterdam. Although we had dreamed of visiting these cities years ago, life kept postponing our plans. Now, walking their streets with my children and grandchildren fills me with deep joy and gratitude.

We all live together in Abu Dhabi, but traveling as a family brings a different kind of closeness. Still, I often found myself thinking of Thomas, their dear Appa, remembering how we once hoped to bring the children here when they were small. As a travel agent, I’ve arranged holidays for so many people, describing every tiny detail of the destinations I know so well—yet I never found the time to take my own family to these same places.

Initially, I wanted a guided tour, something comfortable and familiar. But my children had other ideas: they wanted to experience everything firsthand—walking, riding the metro, catching buses and Ubers. For me, the endless walking wasn’t easy, but with laughter, photo breaks, and a little determination, we made it through. I kept reminding myself that there was a time for everything.

When we are young and full of energy, we focus on responsibilities—saving for a home, providing for our children, and building a secure life. Later, when those duties ease, health may not be as strong, and sometimes, one partner is left behind. That thought stayed with me during this trip, reminding me to treasure every moment.

Paris was everything I imagined and more—the magnificent Eiffel Tower sparkling at night, a relaxing night cruise through the Seine River, the graceful churches, the stunning works of art that fill its museums, especially the Louver. As an artist myself, seeing the Mona Lisa’s mysterious smile and the centuries-old paintings that still shine with color was almost spiritual. I often wondered how such masterpieces were created without modern tools or conveniences.

I would return to Paris in a heartbeat. It’s a city that embraces you with its charm and beauty. Walking through the streets in my saree, often the only Indian woman dressed that way brought curious smiles and warm “Namaste” greetings that made me proud of my roots.

In Amsterdam, I found peace in the gentle rhythm of the canals, the elegant bridges, and the spotless streets. I was amazed by how clean and orderly everything was—no litter, no noise, just calm beauty, and the occasional echo of a police siren in the distance.

Throughout the journey, I thanked the Lord for every blessing: my sons Timmy and Tobby, my daughters-in-law Anitha and Jismy, and my sweet grandchildren Maria, Aryah, and little Zayne. Watching them laugh and explore together filled me with gratitude.

King Shantanu once wished to trade his kingdom for his youth—and after this trip, I finally understood why. These seven days reminded me how precious good health and energy are.

There truly is a time for everything. Enjoy your youth while you have it—run, walk, climb, and explore, even if you have little money. Life is God’s precious gift: live it fully, worship Him, and give thanks for every breath, every moment of health, and every bit of happiness.

To the younger generation, my message is simple: don’t wait until all your responsibilities are over. Start exploring with your family now. Take your children with you before they take you around. Cherish this season of life—it passes faster than you think.
